Kauai Keiki Excursions - East Side

Since I began my business, Nana's Babysitting Service & Equipment Rentals, I am often asked, "what is there to do for children on Kauai?" In my first blog post I would like to share some of my favorite places to take your keiki (children) on the east side, which includes Kapaa, Wailua and Lihue.

Kilohana Train Ride

An excellent adventure for your keiki is the Kilohana Train Ride located right in the heart of Lihue at 3-2087 Kaumaualii Highway on Kilohana Plantation. The 40 minutes guided train tour takes you through the 105-acre plantation where keiki ride in an open-air train and learn about the local tropical fruit, vegetables, flowers, and trees. Keiki will also learn about the animals that live on the plantation including, sheep, horses, goats, cattle, ducks, geese and a hungry herd of wild pigs.

Before the tour wraps up, the train stops and allows passengers to disembark and feed the animals. The animals are behind a wire fence, but I always like to keep a close eye on the keiki's little fingers. The goats and pigs can be especially pushy!

I have personally taken this train ride with keiki several times, and they all have a great time! And they learn about Kauai and get to feed animals! That's usually a win-win!

Ke Ala Hele Makalae Kapaa Coastal Bike Path

Another great excursion on the eastside is the incredibly scenic coastal bike path in Kapaa which starts at Lihi Park and follows the coast north just past Donkey Beach. There are several covered picnic tables along the way for you to stop and enjoy the view while having a snack!

Bike rentals are available at several locations in Kapaa. Below are just a few that can accommodate your needs and get you all geared up to enjoy a great family adventure along Kauai's coast!

Lydgate Park and Kamalani Playground

Lydgate Park is a favorite spot for locals and visitors to enjoy a sunny Kauai day!

A keiki pond is a great place for little kids to safely swim, play, and learn to snorkel!

Across from the pond is Kamalani Playground. Kamalani is like a kid's dream treehouse! A massive wood structure full of tunnels and secret passageways, challenging obstacles, slides, and swings. The park also has large open fields for ball games, kite flying or a fun game of tag!

Lydgate Park is a perfect place to spend the day with your family! The park has full amenities including covered picnic tables with BBQs and a pavilion for large celebrations. Lydgate Park is on Leho Drive in Lihue.

Do you have a favorite place that you take your children on the east side of Kauai? If so, please share it with others by leaving the information in my comments.
